Why I Care So Much About Garment Development

In 2010, I launched my first fashion brand with excitement and a strong creative vision. Like many designers starting out, I was passionate about creating beautiful garments and bringing my ideas to life.

However, I quickly discovered that turning a design into a well-made garment is far more complex than it first appears.

At that time, I did not yet have strong technical support in the development process. Important steps such as detailed sizing review, pattern adjustments, and sewing construction guidance were not clearly defined. As a result, the factory had to interpret many details on their own.

The outcome was challenging. Some garments returned with waist measurements that were too small, and the size grading was inconsistent. Even though the designs looked good on paper, the final garments did not fit customers properly.

For a small boutique brand, problems like this can be very costly. The collection ended up with excess inventory that could not be sold, and eventually the brand had to close.

Although it was a difficult experience, it became one of the most important lessons in my career.

I learned that great fashion ideas need more than creativity—they require strong technical development, clear communication with factories, and careful attention to fit and construction.

That experience shaped the way I approach garment development today.

Now, through Pauline Studio, my goal is to help designers and brands avoid these same challenges by guiding them through a structured development process—from design refinement to production preparation—so their garments are ready for the real world of manufacturing.

Because when development is done right, great ideas have the opportunity to truly succeed.
